PRENUPTIAL AGREEMENTS
A prenuptial agreement, is a written contract between the parties that predetermines the financial outcome should their marriage or civil union end. With people getting married or entering partnerships later in life, or entering second marriages with children involved, and the increase in people owning their own homes and businesses when entering into marriage or a civil union - not to mention the overwhelmingly high divorce rate in this country- I believe everyone should have a prenuptial agreement.
Why not decide how matters should be resolved fairly when you are most in love and commited to one another instead of waiting until anger or the tragedies of life arise? Why not discuss what will be marital assets AND debts before you commit to one another. Why not plan out and thoroughly discuss your financial future before it becomes the reality?
A Prenuptial Agreement isn't giving you an out or preparing for the worst as some cynics would say. It is marital insurance. It is an instrument for a discussion of the better and the worse. It is the proactive approach to a happy and stable partnership or marriage.
